Indie Arts presents ' Landscapes at the Library' with Cheryl Warren

An invitation for an evening with artist Cheryl Warren and to meet members of the Independent Cambridge community. Thursday, March 14 from 7 to 9pm at Espresso Library, East Road, Cambridge CB1 1BG. Invite open to all! Cheryl is an artist and expressionist painter. She's also a member of Independent Cambridge and we're very happy to be collaborating on promotion of this event. You can come along to meet us - Anne and Steve, founders of Independent Cambridge, view Cheryl's stunning exhibition and meet our Indie members too. Also ON THE NIGHT Cheryl is offering a 15% discount on art work purchased from the exhibition. A bit about the artist: With an original training in sculpture, Cheryl now works with oil paint - producing both large and small-scale works. She works from her studio in North Cambridge where she hosts open events throughout the year. In 2009 she graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with an MA in Art Therapy. She has been a practicing professional artist for 21 years. Her show at Espresso Library displays a large selection of her work. "My inspiration has long been environments, both external and internal. There is an interaction between the two that is of a constant interest to me. I spend my time walking, photographing and sketching, absorbing my place in the landscape. No light, weather, texture, wind, feeling, mood or day is ever the same. I then return to the studio. I try to capture the feeling and atmosphere as well as the physical detail. The aim is to distill the occasion into the work without marks that are extraneous or unnecessary.” www.cherylwarren.com We do hope you can join us for this, our first Indie Arts event.

Overview: This is for artists who enjoy working from photographs in a clean, patient manner.

What makes a good portrait? Likeness? Expression? Mood? Detail? Beauty as they say is in the eye of the beholder, but in this workshop we will look at number of techniques and considerations involved in creating a dynamic large-scale portrait in charcoal.

While working in black and white can simplify the process, a number of subtle techniques are required in taking a drawing from personal photograph to a finished and ready-to-frame piece of art. There is much more to this than one person and their stick of charcoal.

rebecca (Andy Dakin)I will bring a number of my own works, photographs and preparatory pieces as reference. Please bring 2 or 3 portrait photographs to be looked at critically, considering images that can offer a variety of ingredients, including (but not necessarily all) light and shade, areas of detail, mood, facial expression and most importantly, how the finished piece will look on the wall. I will provide a number of my own black and white photos for those without.

What to bring: Large white paper, ideally no smaller than A2 and a drawing board to match. Charcoal/charcoal pencils, pencils, erasers/pencil eraser, ruler (ideally large) fixative.

Workshop cost: £30 for Members and Friends, £40 for Non-members. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

The Lots Road Group’s latest exhibition presents a microcosm of contemporary British society through the artists’ own connection to family and friends. Seventeen members of the group have chosen an eclectic mix of sitters - diverse in age, gender, ethnicity, and nationality of origin. Having connected with each other through our attendance at The Heatherley School of Art we decided to explore through portraiture how our personal connections spread outwards and reflect life in 21st century Britain.

Set against the backdrop of Brexit, a time often described as divisive, our sitters are people to whom we have personal ties, some traditionally British from Aberdeenshire, Cornwall, Oxfordshire, Sussex and Yorkshire, as well as residents who have come here from a staggering array of countries: Bolivia, Brazil, British Guiana, Eritrea, France, Iraq, Norway, Pakistan, Poland and the United States.

Connected Exhibition (Katherine Firth)As usual, our exhibition has a narrative component which introduces our sitters and explains how we are connected to them. Several sitters evidence changing tastes, of Britain being more open both to the world, to different lifestyles and conscious of the impact all our lives have on our environment. There are also very long- term friendships, touching stories of young people being added to family circles, and of courageous immigrants finding a new life in this country, or helping others acquire skills they need.
