By kind invitation of the organisers of the Cambridge Literary Festival, The Lots Road Group of Portrait Painters are reprising their London Exhibition The Art of Reading, in association with BookTrust.  The 15 portraits span all ages. All explore the joys of reading, and subjects include well-known authors, agents, family and friends. Each painting is accompanied by a narrative revealing the subjects' reading tastes and the influence of reading on their lives.

CDS member, Katherine Firth, has painted Professor Dame Gillian Beer, ex-President of Clare Hall, renowned literary critic and author and Honorary Patron of the Cambridge Literary Festival.

The Festival runs from Tuesday 18th April - Sunday 23rd April; with evening events only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the main Festival events running all day on  Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The Hall will act as a central hub for book sales and signings and will be open from 10am-9pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Coffee will be available and visitors are welcome to drop in whether or not they are attending one of the events.  Visit the Festival website for details about event booking.

Charles Evans has been painting all his life, and is a full-time artist and demonstrator for Winsor Newton. As well as workshops in his studio at home in Northumberland, he travels the country teaching and demonstrating at painting societies, Patchings Art Festival and the NEC. Charlie (as he is known to everyone) believes that everyone can paint and he is adept at demystifying the process by showing step by step how a painting is produced. His students paint along with him, absorbing tips and techniques along the way. Charlie also has a range of inexpensive books to reinforce his methods.

James Horton is an artist of national and international repute who works mainly in oil and watercolour but also in pastel.  He emphasizes that his work, whether portrait or landscape, is predominantly from life. He is a past member of CDS and is very well known to many members who have benefitted from his classes. Only a few years after leaving the Royal College of Art, James was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists and in 2009 he was elected as the Society’s President.   During his time as President he has some overseen some controversial changes, including the introduction of on-line submission of digital images for non-members hoping to have their work selected for the open exhibitions. The evening will undoubtedly provide a fascinating insight into role of President of a prestigious London art society. There will be a charge of £5 per person paybale on the evening.

An Evening with David Porteous-Butler

Following on from our recently successful and informative evening with Bruce Pearson, we are pleased to announce that our November evening event will be a talk and demonstration given by David Porteous-Butler. David creates stunning work using a palette knife with Oils and Acrylic, and will share his skills and technique as he develops a cityscape during the evening. There will be a charge of £5 per person paybale on the evening.

Background

David Porteous-Butler’s work reveals an honest and direct affinity with his subject that is driven by his love of the natural world. He studied in London under the late Sir Kyffin Williams RA and Anthony Green RA before being offered a place at the Royal College of Art. He has remained close to Sir Kyffin’s fundamental belief that drawing and draughtsmanship are a vital part of the artist’s craft.

Born in North London in 1945 his childhood was spent in and around Highgate and then settling in Suffolk in 1978, he knew from a very early age that his purpose in life was to be an artist. Despite being offered a place at the Royal College of Art he was unable to take up his place for personal reasons.  Thus he spent some time working in the fashion business as a very successful designer. This period heightened his awareness of shape and form before he returned to his true vocation as a painter and sculptor.

English countryside (especially Suffolk) is a true love, although he has also worked extensively in Southern Europe including time in France and Italy. Working with a limited palette, he is always faithful to the truth in what he sees. His portraits reveal the same integrity, and his sculptures, whether in bronze, stone or marble, are faithful to his belief in a natural and simple beauty in all things. They assume the life and presence of the subject matter, both in their execution and in how they relate to their surroundings.

David’s work is in collections in the UK, France, Italy and the USA. He regularly exhibits in and around the county.

Bruce Pearson has illustrated many books on various aspects of wild life and gives many lectures on the topic of An Artist in the Natural World. For this evening event Bruce will give a short slide show, followed by a demonstration based upon his wide experience working in the Antarctic. He produces superb photos and works rapidly and stunningly on rolls of wall-lining paper to give brilliant studies of wild life and of scenery with a very personable delivery.

Profile

Bruce Pearson has worked over the last 40 years as an artist completing private commissions from individuals, museums and institutions. Following an invitation from the Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) Bruce has participated in international art events and exhibitions in the USA, Europe and South America. In the Uk he has contributed to a number of group exhibitions and has undertaken a number of solo commercial gallery shows.

Initially Bruce worked as a freelance illustrator on a range of natural history books, magazines and journals. He wrote and illustrated "An Artist on Migration". A chapter within this book focused on the seasonal floods in the West African region of Sahel, and subsequently part of the migration story was foilmed and shown on BBC2 titled "Beyond Timbuctu", presented by Bruce.

In addition to painting and printmaking, in earlier years Bruce has filmed in Antarctica as a Director/Cameraman on a project which evolved from a collaborative idea into a documentary programme called "The Private Life of the Fur Seal", which was shown on BBC1. The led on to a second programme "The 150 Millon Tonne Shrimp, which was a far more complex Antarctic story, subsequently shown on BBC2. As a result of these successes, Bruce was commissioned by Channel 4 to write and present the six part "Birdscape" series covering a range of british landscapes, and the lives of some of the birds and people associated with them.

Much more information on Bruce and his work can be found on his website: http://www.brucepearson.net/index.html
