Overview: CDS member Shane Swann will run an online one day workshop, demonstrating the techniques that he uses to produce his wildlife drawings.
The introduction will include how he became interested in art, what lead him to focus on wildlife illustration and the message behind his work.
In the first part of the workshop Shane will focus on demonstrating multiple linear based drawing techniques, using fine tip pens and pencils - to give viewers an idea of the mechanics behind his methods. Workshop participants can then practice themselves.
In the second part Shane will work on producing a wildlife portrait, which participants can observe and use as inspiration to create their own image using their own reference photo. Questions and advice throughout the session will be most welcome.
About the tutor: I have been creating artwork for most of my life, and have experimented quite considerably with different styles over the years - ranging from abstract to portraiture. This has enabled me to explore a variety of media and techniques. In 2011 I became interested in drawing local wildlife. However in 2014 I was working on a drawing of the extinct British wolf - whilst gathering information about this, I became aware of many other native species that had also been lost due to human activity. This inspired the beginning of an ongoing, continuously evolving series of art that focuses on endangered and recently extinct animals, as well as related environmental issues. I feel highlighting and promoting awareness about these issues is important, and art is an effective tool in dong that.
Application Form: Click here
What you need for the workshop:
- A photo of a fur/hair covered animal to use as reference.
- Paper suitable for drawing on.
- Sharp HB pencil.
- Black ink fine tip pens - 0.05 and 0.1 nibs (I usually use Microns or Staedtler pens).
Workshop cost: £15 for Members and Friends, £20 for Non-members.

To help us keep in touch with each other while exhibitions and other activities are postponed, I would like to invite you to an informal social gathering in my garden on Wednesday afternoon 2nd September from 3 to 5.00 p.m.
I live in Leys Avenue, Cambridge, and my garden is relatively large for a Cambridge city garden, so there is plenty of room for social distancing. Also, there is an awning we can sit under if it is either too hot, or it rains. There is also parking on the street.
There would be no agenda. It would just be an opportunity to have a chat over a cup of tea or a cold drink.
As current Covid rules allow six people from different households to meet in a private garden, I will include the first five people who phone (01223-357642) or email me (yvonne@yvonnejerrold.co.uk) to say they would like to come.
This event is open to CDS Members and Friends

Acrylic painting is a rich and colourful experience. To have the opportunity to explore and play with the diverse array of colours on offer is a wonderful inspirational activity.
