Cambridge Drawing Society member  Jo Tunmer is exhibiting at Cambridge Christmas 2014.

Cambridge Christmas is a group of contemporary arts and crafts designer-makers who takes the opportunity close to Christmas to exhibit works which make ideal Christmas gifts.

Doors open on Monday 24th November, from 12:00 to 8:30pm. It is a one day only event.

Over the last seven years the Cambridge Christmas' reputation has grown and this year the opening hours have been extended to allow more people to enjoy it. The atmosphere in the historic Unitarian Church Hall has been described as ‘magical’ and it is the perfect way to begin the Christmas season. As in previous years, visitors will enjoy the pre-Christmas buzz over a glass of mulled cider and mince pie, bumping into friends and meeting the artists who all live and work locally.

Artists are hand-picked to showcase a diverse range of gifts. Look out for exciting new  exhibitors this year, several are Cambridge Open Studio regulars - ceramicist Helen Martino, jeweller Jonathan Deer, textile artist Clarissa Cochran and illustrators Aurora Cacciapuoti and Jo Clark.

Returning are some familiar faces; jewellers Abi Cochran, Claire Howieson and Marieke Hordyk; glass artist Alison Tait, who is returning to the show after her recent relocation to Scotland; illustrators Alison Hullyer and Roxana de Rond; ceramicist Amanda MacPhail, bookbinder Edel Hopkin and painter and wire artist Rhiannon Thomas.

Please do join us to view new work by the makers at affordable prices and feast on a mini mince pie and a glass of mulled cider at this free event on Monday 24th November midday-8.30 pm.  At the Unitarian Church Hall on Victoria Street, off Emmanuel Road Cambridge, CB1 1JW.

For more information please go to the website.

This one day work-shop is designed as an introduction to the incredible world of pastels in all it’s forms! Val will introduce you to an array of possibilities, from creating your own painting surface to combining soft pastels with other painting mediums such as watercolour, gouache and acrylics etc. You will be able to experiment with a range of supports and textures, creating your exciting surfaces to work on.

Step-bystep demonstrations and individual tuition will be provided through-out the day.

Who should attend?

This work-shop suit both beginners or individual who already has some experience of working with soft pastels, but wishes to develop their skills further and explore new possibilities!

What to bring:

• Pastel pencils - if you have them, but don’t worry if you do not

• Hard pastels - Conte or similar

• Soft pastels - bring whatever you have

• Pastel paper - ideally a sanded surface such as Fisher400, Colourfix or similar, or Clairefontaine Pastel Card, or mount-card - minimum size A3. Val will have some paper for sale starting at £2.50 per half sheet depending on the brand

• Paints - Watercolours in tubes (Ultra-Marine Blue & Burnt Sienna) or Gouache (White + a small selection of other colours), or Acrylics (same colours). These paints will be used for quick, tonal underpaintings only!

• Large brush - 1” flat synthetic or hog

• Large Water pot

• Kitchen roll & wet-wipes

• Newspaper - for the floor & to make a tray to catch pastel dust

• Easel - ideally free standing, but can be table top as long as it can be adjusted into an upright position

• Photographic images to work from - I’m leaving the subject to each individual, but keep it simple as time will be limited. A simple landscape/seascape is ideal!

• Fixative - optional, but if you do buy some I recommend Sennelier (no hairspray please)

• A sheet of Glassine paper to protect your completed picture - Val can sell you a sheet for 50p

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, but please bring a packed lunch. If you have any questions regarding this workshop or the list of materials please contact Val at her studio on 01223 833064 or her mobile 0777 345 1856

Val works from her studio in Whittlesford where she tutors and hosts a full programme of painting
