Local artist supports Secret Art Show for MS charity

Online viewing opens Monday 11 April
Online sales from Monday 18 April

Lizanne van Essen, along with more than 250 other UK artists, has submitted artworks for an anonymous online exhibition in aid of a charity that supports people with multiple sclerosis.

Over 470 brand new artworks are on offer in the Secret Art Show, all 12cm x 12cm in size, featuring a large variety of creative styles and techniques. All the artwork is displayed anonymously and signed on the reverse, so that the artist remains a secret until the buyer receives it in the post. Each artwork will be sold for £45 in aid of the MS Trust and you will need to be quick off the mark to make sure you don’t miss a masterpiece!

Jo Sopala, Fundraising Director for the MS Trust says:
“The Secret Art Show is an exciting event in the MS Trust’s calendar and we are overwhelmed by the fantastic support we receive from the artist community. More than 100 people are diagnosed with MS every week and this can be a frightening and uncertain time. The generous support of both artists and art enthusiasts means that the MS Trust is able to offer free information and support to everyone who needs it”.

The online gallery will be open to view from Monday 11 April with sales starting at 9am on Monday 18 April. You could discover a valuable artwork at a great price and help to support an amazing charity!

For more information about the Secret Art Show please contact Laura Percival at the MS Trust on 01462 476707 or email

Editor’s notes

MS is the most common disabling disease of the central nervous system affecting young adults. Its symptoms vary and can include loss of muscle control, speech, vision and balance. The disease is usually diagnosed when people are in their 20s and 30s and is currently incurable, although some of the symptoms of MS can be treated.

The Secret Art Show is the brainchild of Jill Holt, who co-founded the MS Trust in 1993 after her mother and aunt were diagnosed with the condition. The first Secret Art Show took place in York in November 2010 and it was such a success that the MS Trust decided to extend the show so that people across the UK could take part. Since 2010, the Secret Art Show has raised more than £100,000 for the MS Trust.

Cultural Connections is a chance to view our late CDS member Mohammed Djazmi's powerful imagery alongside the work of artists Deanna Tyson and John Lyons. Opens Wednesday 6th April - Sunday 24th April

Preview, Meeting the Artists: Saturday, 9th April: 12.30pm - 2.30pm

Mask-making Workshop: Saturday, 16th April: 1.30pm - 4pm

'Don't Stop the Carnival' celebration event, Saturday, 23rd April: 1pm - 4pm

We would like to invite you to the Preview of this unique exhibition which aims to enable visitors to discover the joys, the endeavors and the need to express differing cultural values of three recognized artists, and how they each come to terms with personal, universal, and historical events in their own inimitable style.

Mohammed Djazmi has said, 'I wanted to portray the social suffering which I encountered...' together with ‘…the problems faced by ordinary people, who live in unfair autocracies....'

Mohammed Djazmi was a gifted, yet modest artist, who was sensitive, and had a strong sense of humanity. Throughout his career, Mohammed spoke the truth on his canvas, and in his prints and drawings.

Deanna Tyson and John Lyons are honored to share and celebrate the memory of his life and work in this exceptional exhibition.

Deanna Tyson is known for her challenging yet delicate touch of dynamic imagery, whilst John Lyons searches forces beneath the surface of things to show their personal, creative, and universal interconnectedness.

Be prepared; in Cultural Connections, you will find the extraordinary and the inspiring in a major, life-enhancing exhibition. This is an exhibition not to be missed; their work will delight and awaken your senses.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Add event to calendar vCal

A reminder of the Society’s forthcoming evening event on Monday 21st March starting at 7.30pm, at St John’s Church Hall, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 8RN. Tony Jackson will be illustrating Tonal Studies in Acrylics including a demonstration in Still Life.

Tony studied painting at Bath Academy of Art (1963-66), going on to teach art in secondary schools for 30 years, finally as Head of Expressive Arts at a school in Hemel Hempstead.  He now exhibits and runs adult art classes in Hertfordshire.  Tony has been on the demonstration circuit for more than 12 years.  His subject matter is wide-ranging including as well as still life, landscape, portrait and geometric abstraction – all mostly in acrylics and pastel.  Tony has given courses on the mechanics of drawing and the strategy involved.  Overall his interests in art are illustrated by his in-depth knowledge of classical and modern art (much of which he lectures on) and his attitude includes some serious thinking of what art should mean to us today.

Light refreshments including delectable morsels will be available during the event.
