This is an informal painting group that will meet weekly for 8 weeks. The group aims to provide communal art painting sessions for those who love to paint.  You do not need to be a talented painter to join, simply someone who enjoys painting or would like to further develop their skills.

The group is led by John Glover, an experienced tutor and excellent landscape and portrait painter.  The artists all do their own thing and receive guidance and tuition from John.  Members paint in oil, water colour or acrylic.

It is a non-profit making and costs £16 per day or £8.00 for either morning or evening sessions.

The venue, Ely Bowling Club is in the centre of Ely and is a convivial venue with drinks and snacks available.

This project is the result of four years work in which I was encouraged by my College to do drawings of Trinity Hall by focussing on doors and windows, a different approach from previous works that portray façades, courts, and ranges of buildings.  My medium is sepia ink, used for both line and wash, and the sixteen drawings are classical in manner, a style that suits both the early mediaeval features of Trinity Hall and the late 18th century neoclassical refacing of the Front Court.  The result, it is hoped, is an intimate portrait of one of Cambridge's smaller and most beautiful colleges, the doors and archways suggesting the passage of countless members and inhabitants of the College over the centuries.  The exhibition is held in the Leslie Stephen Room, a pleasant old room overlooking Front Court, in which the pale wooden panelling with its elegant mouldings matches the classical style of these drawings.

The exhibition is open to the public, free of charge, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12.30, and on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from September 14th through to November 17th.  Additional times for visiting may be arranged with the College; call 01223 332555 or email: events@trinhall.cam.ac.uk   All works are for sale, and there are also postcards of the drawings for sale that the College has produced most attractively.

Some examples of my drawings may be viewed on my website: www.colinhayes.info

STOP PRESS 20th September:  Fifteen of the sixteen framed originals on display have now been sold or reserved.  We shall be making fine-art prints from now on, mounted (but not framed) for sale at a price in the region of £30; so if you visit and are interested in a print of any drawing(s) do please fill in one of the forms to be found in the room, and I shall then contact you.

One of my favourite quotes is one by Andy Warhol - “Don’t think about making art, just get it done.  Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it.  While they are deciding, make even more art.”

So this is what I've been doing. Since my last Cambridge Open Studios in 2011 I have been busy exhibiting my landscape oil paintings, completing a year-long certificate of Advanced Printmaking at the Curwen Print Study Centre, challenging myself physically with a trek in the Sahara, and visiting some of my favourite cities in the world for inspiration. And of course, then returning to the studio to produce the work.

Since learning how to print with polymer plates, an exciting fine art original printing technique that I have fallen in love with, my head is full of new possibilities.  The start of my collection based on Cambridge City uses this technique and they will be on display at my Open Studios.  Of course, I also have a body of landscape oil paintings on wood and canvas too.  You will also find hand-pulled and printed greeting cards, including the launch of my new collection of boxed cards, etchings on perspex, unframed prints and a few original oils on paper in the browsers.

I will be opening my studio and gallery space at 59 Highworth Avenue, Cambridge CB4 2BQ from 11 until 6 pm on Saturdays 13/20 July and Sundays 14/21 July. Elderflower juice, coffee, teas and biscuits will be served.

Yvonne Jerrold's paintings in Prickwillow Phone Box Gallery

The Phonebox Gallery, Main St., Prickwillow

This was the brainchild of villager and gallery curator Nick Edell who received enthusiastic backing from Prickwillow Village Council, back in the Autumn 2010, when the council purchased the phone box from BT for just £1 with the only restriction on the sale being that it was not moved. With no funds available for the restoration, a number of villagers stepped in to offer their services for free. Local builder Dave Simpson carried out the bulk of the work using red and black paint leftover from a refurbishment of the village hall. The door lock was fitted by Council Member Richard Raine and the box was cleaned by East Cambs District Councillor Jackie Petts.

“We are hoping that this phone box – an iconic English space – will capture community imagination and we’re already very excited about the level of enthusiasm the idea has received.” The gallery... continued at:    http://prickwillow.org/?page_id=42

A Book of drawings and statements by 100 illustrators, artists and cartoonists who Believe in Drawing.

by John Holder and Philip Hodgkinson

This book published by Haus is available at Heffers for £15. There are short essays and statements on 'Why I believe in Drawing'  by 100 artists, with examples of their work. Anyone who likes drawing will enjoy this book for the wide variety of styles and content. There are 7 contributions from members of the CDS.

'In an age of the virtual, when the chosen means for many artists is film, photograph, or even sound, the primacy of drawing may seem under threat. However, in  many instances, drawing remains as crucial for artists who are at the forefront of innovation as it does for those who maintain a commitment to a more traditional language.' - from the foreword by Sir Nicholas Serota
