Overview:

This one day work-shop is designed as an introduction to the incredible world of pastels in all it’s forms! Val will introduce you to an array of possibilities, from creating your own painting surface to combining soft pastels with other painting mediums such as watercolour, gouache and acrylics etc. You will be able to experiment with a range of supports and textures, creating your exciting surfaces to work on.

Step-bystep demonstrations and individual tuition will be provided through-out the day.

Who should attend?

This work-shop suit both beginners or individual who already has some experience of working with soft pastels, but wishes to develop their skills further and explore new possibilities!

What to bring:

• Pastel pencils - if you have them, but don’t worry if you do not

• Hard pastels - Conte or similar

• Soft pastels - bring whatever you have

• Pastel paper - ideally a sanded surface such as Fisher400, Colourfix or similar, or Clairefontaine Pastel Card, or mount-card - minimum size A3. Val will have some paper for sale starting at £2.50 per half sheet depending on the brand

• Paints - Watercolours in tubes (Ultra-Marine Blue & Burnt Sienna) or Gouache (White + a small selection of other colours), or Acrylics (same colours). These paints will be used for quick, tonal underpaintings only!

• Large brush - 1” flat synthetic or hog

• Large Water pot

• Kitchen roll & wet-wipes

• Newspaper - for the floor & to make a tray to catch pastel dust

• Easel - ideally free standing, but can be table top as long as it can be adjusted into an upright position

• Photographic images to work from - I’m leaving the subject to each individual, but keep it simple as time will be limited. A simple landscape/seascape is ideal!

• Fixative - optional, but if you do buy some I recommend Sennelier (no hairspray please)

• A sheet of Glassine paper to protect your completed picture - Val can sell you a sheet for 50p

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, but please bring a packed lunch. If you have any questions regarding this workshop or the list of materials please contact Val at her studio on 01223 833064 or her mobile 0777 345 1856

Val works from her studio in Whittlesford where she tutors and hosts a full programme of painting
