Andy Dakin, Opium Poppies, Nextdoor, oil on canvas
oil, charcoal, pencil, watercolour
86 Hobart Road, Cambridge, CB1 3PT

I am attracted to unexpected colours, deep shadows, and real life that light or experience can turn into something that bit out of the ordinary.

Since returning to art in 2013 (after a 20 year hiatus) I have produced some fairly detailed charcoal drawings, alongside sketching in pencil and watercolour and lots of life drawing. More recently I am working in oils from my sketches and photographs.

I’m a fan of figurative art from post-impressionism on, but that which offers something more, something surprising in terms of colour, tone and composition, such as Bonnard, Vuillard, Hopper, Alex Katz, Peter Doig and more recently I have been inspired by Casey Baugh and Ben Aronson. I also like the American llustrators Norman Rockwell and Bernie Fuchs. I’m excited by those works where you wonder ‘why did the artist do that?’ That’s what I’m aiming for.
