Jo Tunmer
Jo is a professional visual artist who grew up in London and has three complimentary components to her practice. Intrigued by the anonymity and isolation that living in a city imposes on people Jo responds to her urban surroundings by creating hand-pulled Solarplate™etchings.
In comparison, Jo’s oil paintings express a romantic, utopian notion of the land. The landscapes are often quiet and devoid of modernity and people. The paintings allow the viewers to reflect, and ultimately accept moments of personal solitude. The third element of her practice pulls the other two elements together and consist of sculptural, architectural forms which are often more conceptual in nature.
Originally trained in Furnishing Textiles and Interior Design Jo pursued an alternative career before returning to the arts at the turn of the millenium. After living in the USA for several years Jo embarked on further studies in advanced printmaking. In 2018 Jo extended her studies further by completing an MA in Fine Art Printmaking, with Distinction. This period of extenisve study enabled her to experiment further with wood cut printmaking techniques and fine art installation.
Alongside her practice Jo is an Artist Facilitator at Kettle's Yard, teaches oil painting and printmaking privately, and mentors students studying for academic exams. She participates regularly on art competition judging panels and is the main panellist for The City Art Book series, founded by Emma Bennett.
Commissioned work includes many pieces for Addenbrooke's Arts, Cambridge, and more recently a print commission for the new Cambridge Building Society central offices.
