Shirley Spottiswoode
Painting and printmaking: these are the breath of life to me. As a painter, I have been hugely influenced by Vincent Lines, my tutor at Art School. Later I was inspired by my Guide, Philosopher and Friend, Archie Sutter Watt with whom I used to paint during the many years I lived in Galloway. His influences, among others were William Gillies and John Piper and I feel their legacy and his all the time. Landscapes and familiar objects are my subject matter. Light in landscape is a primary interest. I love good draughtsman ship and clear colour. I seem mostly to work using mixed media; water colours, acrylics, oil pastels and ink, which are all the means to an end.
