Caroline Forward
Caroline Forward’s work as an oil painter is about constant change, loss and what is left behind or preserved over centuries in an environment. She is intrigued by marks of time on aged natural surfaces. Currently her inspiration is the often timeless character of ancient lines and rock surfaces found in the coastal geology of shorelines. These formations have been subject to the eternal rhythm of the tide, the relentless forces of the elements and the internal forces of the earth’s movements. She loves the minutiae of detail on the immense land mass of this precious environment, exploring connections across time and place, locally and globally.
Caroline uses oils and cold wax to build up layers into which she presses textures, makes and reveals marks, finds and incises lines, to create a painting with a sense of history. The surface comes alive as the underlayers peep through, lines twist, break, rejoin, and textures hide and reveal what lies underneath. It mirrors the physical formation of the geological strata that so fascinates her.
Caroline lives and works full time as an artist in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Her work is held in private and corporate collections across the world, is published in “Portraits for NHS Heroes”. She exhibits regularly in the UK, including annually with Riverside Arts group of artists as part of Cambridge Open Studios.
